Simien mountains

This looks like the grand Canyons but greener

Taking my customers to the Simien mountains doesn’t feel like work to me. The longest I stayed in my favorite park is 10 days. Despite lacking the basics of every day life, I am pretty sure I can stay in the park for a month or more.

THE SIMIEN NATIONAL PARK

A park stretching —- kms square, the Simien mountains national park is home to the most glamorous mountain chains in Africa. At a maximum point of 4,600 meters, the Simien mountains may not be home to the highest peak in the world. But my customers who have have been to some of the highest mountains in the world ( Kilimanjaro and the Grand Canyons) describe it as having some of the best views. Alex Mills, who covered 30 countries world wide, told me that the Simiens look like the grand Canyons but greener.

The Simiens is full of amazing view points and mountain chains extending to the horizon. Different from most national parks, it is home to a variety of wildlife. It is home to the endemic Chilada baboon and the majestic Walia Ibex. The reddish Ethiopian wolf has enough population in the Simien mountains making sightings possible. Surrounded by the tallest mountains, the Simien mountains have been home to people who lived in isolation for centuries. That is what one gets while in the Simien: perfect place to hike with stunning views, wildlife and culture.

Another aspect of the Simien mountains which makes it distinct from other national parks is its altitude variation at different points of the park. Because of this every days trek promises different landscapes with new kinds of plants and vegetation. It is a park blessed with a variety.

OVER VIEW OF SIMIEN TREKKING TOURS

There are a number of possible variations of possible tours which I have covered in an other section ( see below) They range from a day trip to an 11 day trekking to the highest summit.

The standard or as some would say the classical Simien tour ranges between 4-5 days. It will be a camping experience where you will have a park ranger(scout), local guide and cook ( at times assistant cook) at your disposal. Tours start with are supposed to start with an acclimatization walk not exceeding 3-4 hours on your first day. Covering 3 of the camping sites in the Park,
